To celebrate my joining the Bleachers, the Reverend has kindly allowed me to pick this week’s Saturday Classic.  After trawling the depths of the Youtube dungeons, I found this tribute to a legend for both my beloved Longhorns and Oilers (RIP) Earl Campbell, the Tyler Rose.

Although I don’t actually remember Campbell playing (I was just seven years old when the Oilers traded him to the Saints), older friends still talk about him like he was a god (that could’ve been Vince Young if the Texans had drafted him - sorry, that’s a gripe for another time).  Unfortunately, the Rose was so battered by the hits he took that his career ended prematurely, and he now has to spend a lot of his time in a wheelchair due to a back condition.  Despite this, Campbell is one of the true legends of Texas football, and a worthy member of both the Pro and College Halls of Fame.

Here’s it is, complete with fuzzy video and terrible 70s music:

Obligatory Post Championship Game BCS Debate January 10, 2008

LSU won the National Championship this week, blowing out Ohio State. So, let’s have the obligatory “is the BCS system broken and should we move to a play-off system?” post.

The reason this debate is so loud this year is that it was a crazy season in college football. No team dominated, no major team was unbeaten, whoever became #2 seemed cursed to lose the following week. The BCS does work sometimes - it obviously did when Texas beat USC two seasons back, but then they were the only two valid championship game teams. This season any number of teams had a claim to being in the Championship game. In the end, I believe LSU were the best team, deserved to be there, and that Ohio State didn’t (I think USC were the real #2 team). (more…)

The Saturday Classic #3: The Hail Flutie December 30, 2007

One of the greatest moments in college football history. Boston College are down 45-41 to the defending champions, University of Miami with one play remaining and the ball on the Hurricanes’ 48-yard line. Eagles quarterback Doug Flutie scrambles and then throws a miraculous Hail Mary pass into 30-mph winds to receiver Gerard Phelan, and a legend is made…

I’d like to wish all of you a happy new year, and I’ll see you all in 2008.

This is a gem of a video. It’s 1975 and Notre Dame are down by 30-10 against Air Force in the 4th quarter. From the bench, cue one Joe Montana to lead the Irish comeback…

Bobby Petrino: Contract Killer December 12, 2007

From this morning’s Associated Press:

“Barely 24 hours after another blowout loss with the Atlanta Falcons, Bobby Petrino was back in college football … Petrino got a five-year deal worth $2.85 million per year to take over the (Arkansas) Razorbacks, according to an athletic department spokesman.”

Let’s have a look at Petrino’s record:

July 13, 2006: Signs 10-year, $25.5 million contract extension as University of Louisville head coach.

January 7, 2007: Signs 5-year, $24 million contract to coach the Atlanta Falcons. Petrino coached just thirteen games of his Louisville contract, and during this time also spoke to Auburn, LSU and the Oakland Raiders.

December 11, 2007: Signs 5-year, $14.25 million contract to coach the Arkansas Razorbacks. Petrino coached just thirteen games of his Falcons contract (see a pattern emerging?), and left three weeks before the end of the season, and one day after their star quarterback was sentenced to 23 months in prison.

Does this guy know what a commitment is? Petrino claims that Arkansas contacted him that day, and he made an instant decision. What B.S.! No decision of this magnitude is made in one day. If I was a Razorbacks fan or player, I wouldn’t be warmly greeting this jerk with open arms.

There must be a competition between college coaches to be the most gutless and integrity free! If so, Petrino is winning this hands down (and Nick Saban is in this competition). Maybe only Les Miles could beat him, and I’m still not sure that Miles U-turning and going to Michigan would top this.

I would imagine that most people have seen this, but there may be one or two people out there who didn’t, so here it is anyway…

There’s two seconds remaining in the SCAC Championship Game between Trinity University and Milsaps College. Trinity need to go sixty-one yards in the final play to win. With the help of fifteen laterals, cue the greatest, and perhaps the silliest, score of all time…

Do Michigan Still Have Miles to Go? December 11, 2007

From today’s Detroit Free Post:

“Louisiana State coach Les Miles appears to be a Michigan coaching candidate again.

Miles had a phone conversation Friday morning with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin and school president Mary Sue Coleman, according to several people with knowledge of the call.”

Now, this is from just five days ago (courtesy ESPN):

“LSU head football coach Les Miles signed a contract extension Thursday to keep him at the university through 2012 and end speculation that Miles might leave for a job at the University of Michigan.”

Now, excuse me if I’m wrong, but if Les Miles was still interested in the Michigan job, shouldn’t he have held off signing the contract extension? Isn’t it funny how ever since Miles “committed” to LSU (keeping the $1.25 million Michigan buy-out clause in place) he has continued to mention Michigan in every interview? What a professional way for your head coach to prepare for a BCS National Championship game!
