The Best Sports Song Ever? May 5, 2008

I was in a conversation about what’s the best sports-themed song ever written. Despite sports’ wide and varied contributions to the English lexicon, there isn’t really many great songs out there that deal with sports. “Walk of Life” by Dire Straits was mentioned, and although it’s a pretty good song, there’s no getting away from the fact that the band was a bit naff, and Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” is another contender, but that came from (in my opinion) his worst album “Born in the USA”, which is let down by the curse of the eighties, horrible synths.

So I plumped for “Centrefield” by John Fogerty. It’s perhaps fitting that the most blue-collar rocker on the planet, the man who makes Springsteen look bling, should come up with what could be the definitive song about America’s national pastime.

If anyone has any other nominations, please let me know, and I’ll post them up here, with a video if one’s available. In the meantime, take it away John (and check out the baseball bat guitar!):
